- April 5 – NCGLNAC Lecture Series – Session 1. Location: Jay County Historical Society,
Portland, Indiana. Learn more about Great Lakes Native Americans in this second lecture of the
three-part series. Sara Wagar, tribal elder and former principal chief of the Piqua Shawnee tribe, will
discuss the impact of the ever-advancing white invasion of the Shawnee homeland during the latter
half of the 1700’s on the Shawnee people, their way of life, and the struggles they went through as
they tried to determine the best path to take to preserve their way of life and their very life itself. Her
talk will draw correlations to modern-day events. 5 p.m. Free and open to the public.
- April 5 & 6 – Spring Cultural Arts Classes. Location: Women’s Building, Jay County
Fairgrounds, Portland, Indiana. Four classes, each lasting 1 1⁄2 days will be offered. Pre-
registration is requested by March 26. Class fee is $75 ($50 for NCGLNAC members). All classes

- April 19 – Academic Conference: Current Research in Great Lakes Native American Culture.
Location: John Jay Center for Learning, Portland, Indiana. Six educators, all of whom are
considered at the top of their field, have accepted the invitation to present their current research
regarding pre-contact, post-contact and current Native American peoples. The conference should be
of interest to educators, students, teachers and life-long students of this area’s history. Pre-
registration before April 11 is $30, $20 for students with student photo identification. Late
registration is $35. Lunch is included in the cost. For more information contact the Conference

- May 17 – NCGLNAC Children’s One Day Class. Location: Jay Public Library, Portland,
Indiana. Dani Tippmann, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, will teach children ages 6 and up. Native
Americans found everything necessary for life in the world around them. Children will learn some
of the secrets of the Miami and everyday life skills. Pre-registration is requested by May 10. Hours

- May 17 – NCGLNAC Lecture Series – Session 2. Location: Jay County Historical Society,
Portland, Indiana. Learn more about Great Lakes Native Americans in this third and final lecture
of the 2008 Lecture Series. John Dunnagan, Vice-Chief of the Miami Indians of the State of Indiana,
and tribal historian, will discuss the history and struggles of the Miami people in Indiana, their
homeland. 5 p.m. Free and open to the public.
- June 7 & 8 – 5th Annual Gathering of Great Lakes Nations Pow Wow. 2008 Gathering Poster
Location: Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Grounds, Portland, Indiana. This is a celebration of Great Lakes
Native American culture. Enjoy Native American drums, singers and dancers, a pre-1840’s living history
camp, Native American foods, artisan demonstrations, storytelling and an auction of museum quality
items. Vendors will be selling Native American items. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Grand Entry at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday. All events are

- August 4 – Native American Concert. Location: Bearcreek Farms, Bryant. Award-winning
Cherokee recording artist Michael Jacobs will perform an incredible blend of Native American and
American “roots” music, a mixture of pop, rock, folk and the Native American flute. Tickets: $15,

- August 4 – 8 – NCGLNAC Cultural Arts Classes. Location: Women’s Building, Jay County
Fairgrounds, Portland, Indiana. Some of the classes planned (each 2 1⁄2 days long) include: cedar
boxes, sterling silver work, women’s traditional dance, personal gourd drums, antler and bone
carving, and traditional living skills. Pre-registration is requested by July 23. Class fee: $95 ($75
for NCGLNAC members). All classes are open to anyone over the age of 12. Contact Kay

- August 4 – 8 – NCGLNAC Cultural Arts Children’s Classes. Location: Women’s Building,
Jay County Fairgrounds, Portland, Indiana. Children will learn all about Great Lakes Native
American peoples that lived in the Jay County area in the past, and still live in Jay County now.
Classes will feature crafts, art work, games, storytelling and folklore. Pre-Registration is encouraged
before July 23. Cost per day per child is $15, including lunch and all materials. Classes are open to
anyone 6 and up.
- September 13 – NCGLNAC One-Day Class. Location: Jay Public Library, Portland, Indiana.
Nita Norcross, Ojibwe descent, will teach students how to make the beautiful beaded, porcupine quill
drop earrings seen so often at pow wows. Pre-registration is requested by September 5. Hours are
10 to 4. Class is open to anyone over the age of 12. Cost: $25, including all materials. For more

- October 4 & 5 – Jay Heritage Festival. Location: Jay County Historical Society, Portland,
Indiana. NCGLNAC will participate with Great Lakes Native American displays, an early 1800’s

- November 1– NCGLNAC One-Day Class. Location: Jay Public Library, Portland, Indiana.
Award-winning gourd artist Carolyn Rushton will teach a personal gourd rattle class from 10 to 4.

- November 1 – NCGLNAC Lecture Series – Session 3. Location: Jay County Historical
Society, Portland, Indiana. Learn about local Native American and Great Lakes tribal history and
culture in this first lecture of the three-part series. Robin McBride Scott, Cherokee descent, will
discuss the fur trade era and its impact on the material culture of the Great Lakes Native peoples. 5
p.m. Free and open to the public.
- November 1 & 2 – NCGLNAC Fall Friendship Fire. Location: Women’s Building, Jay
County Fairgrounds, Portland, Indiana. A gathering of members and friends for fellowship, site
work, education, and a lecture. A simple craft will be completed. Pre-registration is requested
before October 25. Cost is $30 per person, including Saturday dinner. Contact Ray Lutz at 412-751-
